BUYING MAIL ORDER Thankyou for purchasing plants via mail order from Utopia Palms and Cycads. Most young seedlings or small pots can be bared rooted and packed in spagomen moss and individually wrapped and shipped Australia post.

PREPARATION Make preparation prior to delivery by purchasing a premium potting mix for potting and a few pots for your plants we recommend a slow release fertilizer or an organic fertilizer and use as recommended on the packaging. [Remember Less is more] Water in well. And provide a shaded area for your plants until they are vigorous. If your plants are going directly into the ground make prepartation for this well in advance. Dig the soil over and use good compost and water well. Some of our tropical plants in the temperate regions of Australia require protection all year round. From the cold winter wind and damp dew. And harsh summer sun. Just check individual species requirements.

YOUR PARCEL ARRIVES Collect your parcel from the post as soon as possible and open it in the shade and soak each plant in a buck of clean water for 20 minutes. [You may add liquid fertilizer of fish emulsion. To encourage root development. Use as the package recommendations.] Pot plants as soon as possible.

Additional instructions Just check individual species requirements. example Areca catechu The first winter you may need to bring this plant indoors/shadehouse from may through to September. Best to grow in a pot in the shadehouse until the following spring and plant out. A sheltered warm position protected from the winter cold wind and damp dew. Well-drained rich soil.

POTTED STOCK Utopia Palms and Cycads are proud to have available a large range of rare plants and some tropical foliage including bromelaides, tillandsia's, heliconia, gingers, costus, calathea, cordylines to name a few.  Some species are limited so only a few will be available at this stage, some of each species will be grown on for 1 to 2 years and then returned to the plant list. Sometimes we do have a few things not listed so do not hesitate to ask. Heliconia's and Gingers are seasonally available plants from approx late October/November. If you are interested in these varieties be aware that over summer most varieties are available. At other times of the year there may be limited varieties and number. Please check availablity. We also endeavour to have the proper botanical names up to date with the current botanical literature; some unnamed species will carry their vernacular name until a botanical name is given. When receiving seeds from new suppliers or collectors we cannot always be absolutely guaranteed of true species but we will do our best. Most nurseries water 3 times a day and there plants are reliant on this to surive. We are unlike regular wholesale nurseries. We only water twice a week and up to 3 times a week over summer when it is hot. Therefore our stock is much more hardy than regular nursery plants because of our watering program, a heavier medium plus a few other factors make our plants require less water and adjust more readily to the landscape situation. Please ask for a quote on larger quantities of plants.
